Server Software Download and Registration Instructions

Applicability

The instructions below apply to the following server products.  If your product is not listed, please visit the support page for your particular product.

EFT Server

EFT DMZ Gateway Server
  Secure FTP Server

Step 1:  Download and Install
  1. To download the software, browse to the relevant product support page above then find your software in the download list and click on one of the download links.
  2. To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.  To copy the program to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.
  3. Follow the onscreen installation instructions.

Step 2:  Registration and Activation

The first time you start the server, you will be prompted to enter a Registration Serial Number.  Click either Enter Trial Serial Number or Enter Serial Number and follow the onscreen instructions.   Registration and activation must be performed through the Server Administrator interface while you are on the server computer.  You cannot enter the serial number while remotely administering the server.

Step 3:  Add-On or Module Installation and Activation
In most cases, add-on modules are included in the main program download file by default.  The exception is the EFT Server SAT module which must be downloaded and activated separately.

If applicable, follow these steps to activate any Secure FTP Server or EFT Server add-on modules you may have purchased or have access to.
  1. If you have not done so already, activate and register the server program as instructed in Step 2 above.  (For EFT Server, all eligible modules except the SAT add-on module and the HS PCI DSS add-on module are activated when you activate the main server program.  For specific SAT module instructions, browse to the SAT module installation and activation instructions in the EFT Server Online Help file.)
  2. Start the server software Administrator interface on the server computer.  Registration and activation must be performed through the Server Administrator interface while you are on the server computer.  You cannot enter the serial number while remotely administering the server.
  3. On the Help menu, click Enter (Module Name) Serial Number.
  4. Input the registration serial number and your name or company name, then click Register.
  5. Consult the Help file for information about configuring the add-on module for use.
Depending on the software, some modules are active during the evaluation period by default.  Other modules may require separate activation, either during or after the evaluation period is over.

Troubleshooting
  1. Check to make sure you are using the correct serial number and that it matches the program name and major version number that was purchased.
  2. To register successfully, you must be connected to the Internet and have administrator privileges on the server computer.  (If Internet access is not available, see Activation and Registration Without Internet Access below)
  3. If a firewall or proxy server is in use, the network administrator should ensure port 80 is open during the registration process.
  4. If you are using Windows 2003 Server and you see a warning when the reminder message appears, click Add to have Internet Explorer recognize content from GlobalSCAPE as safe content.
  5. Registration and activation must be performed through the Server Administrator interface on the server computer.  You cannot enter the serial number while remotely administering the server.
  6. Common Registration Error Messages
  7. Alternative Registration Method
  8. What to do if the Server does not have Internet access.
  9. For EFT Server and DMZ Gateway Server, the trial period is predetermined by a GlobalSCAPE sales associate.  For Secure FTP Server and Home FTP Server the trial period is 30 days.
  10. If you are using Windows 2003, see the important note below.

Alternative Registration and Activation Method (also referred to as Manual Registration)
All registration serial numbers are validated over the Internet by the GlobalSCAPE registration and activation server.  Once a registration serial number is validated, certain registration information is sent from your computer to our registration and activation servers for processing. Your registration information is used to create a registry key which is then automatically merged into your Windows registry. Although this process is highly reliable and is usually transparent to the end user, the potential for error exists. If you receive an error or if Internet access is not available, the solution may be to register the software "manually". To do so, follow these steps.
For Secure FTP Server

If the automated registration and activation process fails, you will be presented with three options.  Select one, then click Next to proceed.  If necessary, first click Configure HTTP Proxy and configure the proxy connection settings.

  • Retry online registration.
    • Automated Internet registration and activation will be attempted once more.
    • Make sure you have a connection to the Internet already established.
    • Administrators: Port 80 must be open to inbound and outbound traffic.

  • Launch the Web registration form.  Select this option only if the first option fails.
    • Follow the prompts to register and activate via a form on our Web site.  If you need to access the online Web registration and activation form from a different computer, browse to http://www.globalscape.com/register/
    • Follow the instructions on the Web page until you are presented with a registry key file (.REG file) then see the registry key file instructions below.

  • E-mail a registration request to our support staff.  You should only choose this option if the two options above fail.
    • To continue, click Next, then click OK.  The required details will be copied to the Clipboard.
    • The Registration Wizard will attempt to start your default email client and open a new email message with the required details already in the body of the message.  If unsuccessful, open a new email message and address it to:

    • For the Subject line, type Registration Request and then paste the contents of the Clipboard into the body of the email.
    • It is important that you do not modify the subject line or body text of the message in any way.
    • Click Send to email us.  (Note that regular or non-conforming email sent to this same email address will not be delivered.)
    • We will respond with the necessary registry key file as soon as possible, usually within one business day.  (See registry key file instructions below.)
For EFT Server and DMZ Gateway
  1. Install and then start the software. When prompted, click Enter Trial Serial Number or Enter Permanent Serial Number as appropriate.
  2. Select the Register Manually check box, provide the necessary details and then click Register.
  3. Click Copy to Clipboard and then click Register on the Web. (If Internet access is not available, see Activation and Registration Without Internet Access)
  4. A new Web browser will open to http://www.globalscape.com/register/
  5. Follow the instructions on the Web page until you are presented with a registry key file (.REG file) then see the registry key file instructions below.

Registry Key File Instructions
  1. Once the registry key file is received, save it to a convenient location but do not attempt to merge it into the registry until you first stop the Server service.
  2. To stop the Server service, use the Server Administrator interface or click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools and then double-click Services.  Choose the relevant GlobalSCAPE Server program, right-click and then click Stop.
  3. Double-click the saved .REG file from Step 1 above to merge the registry key into the registry.
  4. You may now restart the Server service.  To restart the Server service, either use the Server Administrator interface or click click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools and then double-click Services.  Choose the relevant GlobalSCAPE Server program, right-click and then click Start.
  5. Close and then restart the Server Administrator interface.  If you encounter an error, please see the Troubleshooting section above or contact our Customer Service team.  If you are using Windows 2003, see the important note below.

Activation and Registration Without Internet Access
If Internet access is not available on the computer being registered, follow the steps outlined for the alternative registration method above. Save the registration data copied to the Clipboard to a text file, then transport it to a computer with Internet access. Browse to http://www.globalscape.com/register/ and follow the instructions. When you click Register me, save the resulting registry key file and transport it back to the server computer on which the Server is installed. At that point you can proceed with the registry key file instructions shown above.

Windows 2003 Considerations
If, after completing the trial registration steps above and stopping and restarting the Server service, the opening Web nag continues to prompt the user with Enter Trial Serial Number instead of the expected Continue Trial, follow these steps to set the Server service to Login as a User having Administrator privileges instead of Local System
  1. Open Control Panel and double-click Administrative Tools then double-click Services.
  2. Select GlobalSCAPE EFT Server. (Substitute the correct program name if necessary.)
  3. Right-click and select Properties, then click the Log On tab.
  4. Click This account and then click Browse to select a user account having Administrator privileges.
  5. Click Ok and then Stop and Restart the Server service to effect the changes.
