Getting Started With Secure FTP Server

System Requirements

  • Windows NT4/2000/XP Pro/2003
  • 400 MHz Pentium II or higher
  • At least 128 MB RAM, 256 or more MB of RAM recommended
  • Any Windows compatible display system
  • Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher
  • Microsoft® ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) installed
  • You must have a working Internet connection during the trial of the product, as well as to perform the product activation. Once activated, an Internet connection is not required to run the software

Installation Instructions

  1. If you have not done so already, download Secure FTP Server from the Secure FTP Server Support Center and save the setup file to a convenient location.  After downloading, locate the setup program (gsftps.exe) and start it. The InstallShield Wizard guides you through the setup process. After the Welcome screen, you must read and then accept the license agreement in order to continue.

  2. Designate the preferred installation folder and click Next.

  3. In Select Components select the components to install and then click Next.

    • FTP Server:  This is the FTP Server service that must be installed onto the server computer.

    • Administrator Interface :  This is the interface used to configure and control the FTP Server service.  This component is required to be installed onto the server computer and may also be installed by itself for  remote administration of the FTP Server service.

    • MSDE Database for Auditing and Reporting Module: This is the optional database for the Auditing and Reporting Module (ARM) Add-on.  You do not need to install this component if you are not using the ARM Add-on or if you already have a MS SQL database to use with the ARM Add-on.

  4. The Administrator Account Settings screen prompts you to create a username and password that allows you to connect and administer the FTP Server engine. Enter a Username and Password and then click OK.

  5. Notice: Keep your administrator logon details safe and secure.  If the administrator username or password is lost, you will not be able to administer the server.  Resetting the administrator account is possible but will result in the loss of all user and group specific settings.

  6. If you chose to install the MSDE Database for Auditing and Reporting Module in Step 3 above, you will see the Database Login Details screen. Enter a username and password for the Auditing and Reporting Module database.

  7. On the final screen, select the Start Administrator Interface check box and then click Finished.

  8. The Server Administrator interface will start.  In the tree in the left pane, click Default Server and log on using the administrator Username and Password selected in Step 4 above and then click Connect.

  9. The first time you start Secure FTP Server you will be prompted to enter a Serial Number.

    • If you are evaluating Secure FTP Server, a trial serial number is needed to continue. If you have not already received a trial serial number you can request one from here. Click Enter Trial Serial Number and follow the instructions.
    • If you have already purchased a license and have received your permanent serial number, click Enter Serial Number and follow the instructions.
    • Notes
      • You must have separate serial numbers for both the HTTPS Add-on and the ARM Add-on.  Click here to get a serial number for one of the Secure FTP Server Add On modules.
      • To activate the software, you must be connected to the Internet and have administrator privileges on the server computer.  You cannot enter the serial number while remotely administering the server.  Click here for complete activation and registration instructions and troubleshooting steps.

  10. After activation and registration is complete, you need to create an FTP site on the server. The Create New Site Wizard starts the first time you connect to the server.  Alternatively, you can start the Create New Site Wizard from the Configuration menu.

  11. Once your FTP site is created, the next step is to create a user account so that a remote user can connect to the site using an FTP client program.  On the Configuration menu, click Create New User.  The New User Account Wizard will take you through steps necessary to create and configure a new user account.

  12. When finished, connect to the Server with your favorite FTP client.  To get the most out of your investment in Secure FTP Server, we recommend CuteFTP Professional.
